Presentation Title: WHERE ARE RARE EARTHS GOOD FOR – AND WHERE DO THEY COME FROM?

ABSTRACT: Rare earth elements (REE) are critical ingredients in many necessities of modern life including: permanent magnets used in electric motors, generators, speakers and hard drives; automobile tires; catalysts; phosphors; optical glass; etc.
World production of REE in 2014 was about 110,000 t with about 98,000 t being “Light” (LREE) and the balance “Heavy” (HREE). The majority of the LREE come from an iron ore mine in China with the balance from two other mines in China and one in Australia. The LREE operations comprise unusual flotation processes and complex hydrometallurgical plants. In contrast, most of the HREE come from small in-situ leach operations exploiting a single, dispersed deposit in China.
The current operations produce an intermediate mixed REE product that is separated into high purity, individual, elements by solvent extraction.
This presentation describes the uses of the REE and the processes used to make these enablers of modern life.
